I guess this is our first official Genius hour blog post with information on how our project is going so far. Honestly, the first couple of weeks have presented a few challenges. Caroline and I both have busy schedules, so finding a time for us to play has been a bit of a problem. We were going to play this weekend, but Caroline has a horse show all this weekend, I have tennis, and on top of all that, it’s homecoming weekend, so we decided this weekend just wasn’t the time to have our first session. Now, I’m coming up with what our first session next weekend will consist of. I'm not really a hundred percent sure what we are going to do because this is my first time trying to teach someone how to play. I'm basing what we do in these sessions on our High School practices, and Clinics I've done in the past. I have to modify what we do because It would be futile for Caroline to do the drills I do in practice because she's a beginner. This is what I'm thinking our first workout will look like.
First, we will start off with some stretching and muscle activation exercises. It’s important to warm up your muscles and not be tight before you jump right into a sport, especially a high impact sport like tennis. After warming up, I’ll teach and show Caroline how to hit the ball, and then I'll drop-feed her some forehands and backhands. After this, we will work on volleying and serving. Then, depending on how the beginning of the session goes, we might try to rally, and maybe even play some points out, though I do not anticipate that happening since this is the first practice. After we do all of that, we’ll probably call it a day and sit down to recap our playing with another blog post. We will keep y'all posted on how it goes next week!

For our Genius Hour project, we are going to be playing tennis. Elliot plays tennis, and is on the High School team, so she will be teaching Caroline how to play. We decided to do this because we are both athletes, and we thought tennis would be a good subject to partake in for our project. Caroline wanted to learn how to play tennis, and Elliot is interested in being a teacher when she's older, so Caroline will learn how to play, and Elliot will learn how to teach her.
Elliot's Perspective: As part of my role as the teacher/coach, I will be the one documenting the experience, and putting our video together. I have been playing tennis since I was about 10 years old, so I am pretty comfortable with the sport itself. The part of this project that will be more challenging for me is learning how to be a good and effective teacher. For a long time, I have thought about being a teacher as my profession when I graduate. This project will be a good way for me to test the waters of teaching as well as challenge myself to be a good teacher for Caroline. Caroline's Perspective: I, Caroline, will be the one learning how to play tennis in our project. I think this project will provide both of us a good challenge and it will be interesting to see how we both progress throughout the course of the project. This project will definitely be something different for both of us, but especially me. I play sports and have done a few different ones in the past including soccer, swimming, and horse riding. The only sport that I have stuck with and am still doing now is horse riding. I have been riding horses for almost 10 years now so I am pretty comfortable and familiar with it. Tennis is, obviously, quite different to horse riding and had I kept going with soccer, for example, this project might be less foreign for me. My hand-eye coordination is pretty much non-existent and tennis requires a lot of that so it will definitely be new territory for me. We are both excited to learn new things! |
